Discipline Policy The Princess Elizabeth School community strives to provide a positive learning environment for all students. We believe our students have the right to feel safe in and around their school. Classroom rules will be discussed with students at the beginning of the year. In order to maintain a safe environment for all students, Princess Elizabeth School has adopted a five-step discipline program. The steps are as follows:
Princess Elizabeth Step Discipline Program
Step One Student receives verbal notification from the teacher that he/she has been placed on Step One for unacceptable behavior. The student is made aware of consequences / future actions should the misbehavior continue. Documentation is kept in the student’s class file. Parents may be contacted.
Step Two Student receives a 15-minute detention. Parents are contacted by teacher.
Step Three Student is referred to the teaching team for a meeting (parents may be asked to attend) and a 30-minute detention is assigned. Parents are contacted by the teaching team. Student will be withdrawn from all extracurricular activities. Documentation is kept in the Team Binder.
Step Four Student is referred to the teaching team for a second discipline meeting. Parents are requested to attend this meeting. Additional detention may be assigned. Students may be referred to the school guidance counselor and/or administration. Documentation is kept in the Team Binder.
Step Five Student is referred to school administration which takes the necessary and appropriate steps, which may include suspension.
* At any time during this process students may be referred to the school administration should the teaching team deem it necessary based on the situation.
Bullying can take many forms. Some examples of physical, verbal and emotional bullying are listed below. Please discuss these with your child
Physical bullying: Pushing, shoving, play fighting, kicking, spitting on others, unwanted touching and taking things without permission. Verbal bulling: Name calling, putdowns, criticisms, teasing, blaming others for something they did not do, making fun of another’s race, skin color, religion, looks, where they live or their family’s origin, or by making threats. Emotional bulling: Making another person feel uncomfortable, unwanted, afraid or embarrassed by staring at them, deliberately excluding them, by laughing at them, or through any form of intimidation.
NOTE We enforce zero tolerance towards acts of vandalism, theft, bullying (physical and verbal), possession/use/selling of illegal substances and/or weapons. For serious infractions of this nature, any of the above steps may be bypassed by the school administration for more immediate action. This action may include suspension from school and the student's) may be subject to police investigation. In order to ensure a safe environment for everyone, the police canine drug detection unit may be called in to search the school at any time. Lunchroom rules
Reasonable effort will be made to accommodate requests from parents of students who need to stay for lunch. Parents are responsible for providing a lunch for their child. EXTRacurricular Activities
The staff at Princess Elizabeth School encourages you to participate actively in extracurricular activities. Our school provides an excellent opportunity for all students to get involved in a wide range of activities. The goals are: To encourage athletic involvement by the supporting of / or participating on school teams and / or our intramural program. To encourage involvement in community activities, social events and special activities, and by sponsoring clubs and other special groups within the school.
If you find an activity missing, find other students with a common interest and a teacher sponsor and get a club started.
Dances at Princess Elizabeth School may be attended by our middle school students and approved guests. Guests are the responsibility of the student signing them in.
Library Services
The P.E.S. library has a collection of print materials (books, paperbacks, magazines, pamphlets and periodicals). Students may borrow materials for periods of time up to two weeks.
Progress Reports and Promotion
Progress reports will be issued three times during the school year. Parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled twice during the academic year (see page 3). The subject teacher will send course outlines and interim reports home throughout the year. Parents may contact their child’s teacher at any time throughout the year to discuss his/her progress.
Counseling Services
All staff members are prepared to provide advice or assistance and students should not hesitate to seek help when it is required. Our part-time guidance counselors are also available to provide assistance if there are difficulties with program, studies, classmates, etc. Students can arrange to see the guidance counselor by getting a referral through their homeroom teacher.
Dress Regulations & valuable items
P.E.S. requires all students to meet acceptable standards of dress and grooming. Our guidelines include neat, clean, modest and appropriate clothing. Shirts must be able to be ‘tucked in’ and must cover a student’s back, front and shoulders. Clothing may not include profanity or inappropriate content. Shorts / skirts must be at least arm’s length. For safety reasons students are not to wear long pocket chains, studded chokers / bracelets, or shoes with wheels. An individual’s appearance should not offend or pose a safety hazard to themselves or others. Jackets, hats, bandanas and book bags are to be kept in student lockers / classroom closets. High value items such MP3 players, Gameboys, cameras, cell phones, skateboards, etc. are not permitted in the classroom and for security reasons should be kept at home. Such items may be confiscated by teachers should they interfere with the learning environment.
Emergency Alarms
Whenever a fire alarm sounds all students and staff must leave the building via the nearest exit. Directions are given to all children on the first day of school. Do not touch the alarm a box unless there is an emergency; to do so is a criminal offence.
Supplies, textbooks and lockers
Each subject teacher will provide you with a list of supplies and equipment you will need. You are expected to bring all necessary materials (texts, notebooks, and pen / pencil) to each class.
Issued textbooks become your responsibility. If a book is destroyed, damaged or lost you will be assessed the cost of the book as per NB Education Act E-1.12 (25).
Middle school students will be assigned a locker. All lockers remain the property of the school and as such are subject to search without notice by school staff. Only combination locks may be used and students must provide their teacher with the combination.
Supply (Substitute) Teachers
A supply teacher will be provided whenever a regular teacher is absent. We expect they will receive your complete cooperation and respect at all times to help them carry out their tasks.
WASHROOMS
Students must obtain written permission from their subject teacher and be signed in and out of class. Students are expected to use the washroom outside of class time so as not to disrupt the learning environment. Agenda hall passes will be used for middle school students.
Telephone
The phone in the office is available to students on an emergency basis only. Students must obtain permission from their homeroom teacher prior to seeking permission from the office. Other calls may be placed using the payphone on the main floor outside the hours of instruction.
Transfers / Change of address (contact information)
As soon as you know you are going to move from our school or your contact information has changed, please inform your homeroom teacher and the office. In the case of a transfer please return all school property to your homeroom teacher prior to leaving.
Custodial Staff
The custodial staff is responsible for maintaining the school in good order. These duties can best be fulfilled if the custodians have the cooperation of all students and staff. In addition, we believe all staff and students must assist in keeping our school grounds clean and free of dangerous materials. Take pride in your school – Don’t litter or deface your school!
